Renovation Material Calculator – Tiles, Paint, Flooring & Baseboards

Calculate tiles, paint buckets, floor planks and baseboard length for your renovation. Enter room dimensions and get accurate quantities with industry-standard waste rates to control your purchasing budget.

Overview

The Renovation Material Calculator helps homeowners estimate purchasing quantities for tiles, paint, flooring and baseboards before construction begins. Enter room dimensions, door and window areas, and material specifications to get ceiling-rounded quantities based on industry-standard waste rates, preventing both over-buying and costly shortages.

How to use

  1. Enter room length, width and ceiling height in meters
  2. Input total door and window area plus total door-opening width for accurate net wall area and baseboard calculation
  3. Enter tile coverage area, tile dimensions and waste rate (5% for floor tiles, 8% for wall tiles)
  4. Fill in the number of paint coats and coverage per bucket to calculate paint needed
  5. Enter floor plank dimensions and waste rate (5% for laminate, 8–10% for solid wood) to see all material quantities

Formula

netWallArea = max(0, 2×(L+W)×H - doorWindowArea); ceilingFloorArea = L×W; tileCount = ceil(tileArea×(1+waste%) / (tileL_mm×tileW_mm/1000000)); paintBuckets = ceil(wallArea×coats / coveragePerBucket); floorPlanks = ceil(floorArea×(1+waste%) / (plankL_mm×plankW_mm/1000000)); baseboard = (2×(L+W) - doorWidth)×1.05

Common scenarios

Master Bedroom Full Estimate

A 4m×3m room with 2.8m ceilings, 5㎡ of doors and windows, 600×600mm floor tiles (5% waste), 2 coats of paint (32.5㎡/bucket), and 1200×190mm laminate flooring (5% waste). The calculator outputs approximately 56 tiles, 2 paint buckets, 168 floor planks and 14.6m of baseboard.

Bathroom Floor and Wall Tiles Separately

A 2m×2m bathroom with 2.6m ceilings: floor tiles 300×300mm covering 4㎡ (8% waste) and wall tiles 300×600mm covering 16㎡ (10% waste). Run two separate calculations to get about 47 floor tiles and 99 wall tiles, then combine for purchasing.

FAQ

What waste rate should I use for tiles? What are the recommended rates for floor tiles, wall tiles and irregular cuts?

Per GB 50327 industry practice, use 5% for floor tiles, 8% for wall tiles (more cuts required), and 10% for diagonal or pattern cuts. Higher waste rates give a larger safety buffer; choose the appropriate rate for your installation method to avoid running short mid-project.

How many coats of paint are needed and how much area does a 5L bucket cover?

Typically 1 coat of primer (optional) plus 2 coats of topcoat, totalling 2–3 coats. A 5L bucket covers approximately 30–35㎡ per coat; the calculator defaults to 32.5㎡/bucket, which you can adjust per the product label. Rough or porous walls absorb more paint, so consider adding a buffer bucket.

Do laminate and solid wood floors have the same waste rate?

No. Laminate flooring is standardised and easy to cut, so a 5% waste rate suffices. Solid wood flooring has more variation and often requires pattern matching, so 8–10% is recommended. Use the lower end for straight-run layouts in regular-shaped rooms, and the upper end when many angled cuts are required.

How is baseboard length calculated? Should door openings be deducted?

Baseboard runs along the perimeter minus door openings: (2×(L+W) − total door-opening width) × 1.05. The multiplication by 1.05 accounts for a 5% cutting waste allowance to ensure you buy a small surplus.

How accurate are the results compared to actual construction quantities? How can I reduce the gap?

The main sources of error are: ① wall niches, columns or irregular shapes not deducted; ② variation in how workers cut tiles; ③ slight batch differences when reordering. We recommend purchasing one extra box (approx. 0.5–1㎡) of matching tiles as a reserve, and buying an extra quarter-bucket of matching paint for touch-ups.

If floor tiles and wall tiles have different specifications in the same room, how do I calculate them separately?

Run the tile section twice: first enter the floor area with floor tile dimensions (5% waste) and note the tile count; then enter the net wall area with wall tile dimensions (8% waste) and note that count. Purchase each type separately. Paint and flooring parameters remain unchanged between the two calculations.
