Overview

GPA is the most critical number for grad-school / scholarship apps, with wildly different scales. Tool handles 5 scales (US 4.0 standard / improved, 4.3, 4.5, Tsinghua 5.0 capped at 4.8) and outputs both weighted (by credit) and arithmetic GPA. Formulas cross-checked with WES & CSCSE. All local.

How to use

Formula

weightedGPA = Σ(gp·c) / Σc
arithmeticGPA = Σ gp / n

Weighted is what grad schools see; arithmetic is rarely used.

Common scenarios

Typical 88-avg for US grad

88 avg × 5 courses · 4 credits each → 4.0-standard GPA = 3.0; 4.0-improved = 3.75. Always confirm the scale.

Tsinghua 5.0 → 4.0

GPA 4.2 (5.0) → ~3.57 (4.0 via CSCSE). Tool's 5.0 mode matches registrar; convert via 4.0 mode for applications.

Weighted only

Tool weights all courses uniformly. Run twice (core-only, all) to compare.

FAQ

How is WES GPA calculated?

WES uses its proprietary A-F mapping (non-public), usually 0.1-0.2 stricter than self-computed 4.0. For PhD/MS visa programs WES is authoritative; self-calc is estimate.

Why do different schools use different scales?

Chinese universities adopted GPA ad-hoc post-2000. Top schools vary (Tsinghua/PKU 5.0; Fudan/SJTU 4.0-improved; HUST 4.3). CSCSE gives standardized 4.0 for degree verification.

Do failed courses count?

Yes, with 0 points. Retakes usually override (higher grade wins); some schools average. Tool includes all; edit scores to simulate retakes.

Do electives / PE affect GPA?

Electives/PE have low weight (1-2 credits vs 3-4 for majors). Most schools weight Major GPA more. Compute major-only separately if non-majors drag you down.
